AC - 2 litre six
AC first built their 6 cylinder overhead camshaft engine as far back as 1922, which was fitted to their 2 litre 16hp, the model that was famously promoted rigorously by the ex cyclist, race driver, pioneer motorist and publicist Selwyn Francis Edge. Post 1945 came the AC 2 litre saloon, updated for the early 1950's witha four door saloon that now had more power and hydraulic brakes. It is remarkable that the same engine with relatively minor alterations spanned so many decades of production, with its continual development!
AC 2 litre tyre sizes:
-The earliest 6 cylinder AC cars (the 16hp and the "6") listed from 1920 onward had beaded edge tyres with size 26x3 (or 700x80 which is the same tyre) and we have also seen the 710x90 tyre size quoted for the later AC Six starting from 1924. Blockley produces both these tyre sizes. Many of these earlier AC's may have had their wheels changed to well base type over the years due to unavailability and cost considerations, but any tyre size that these AC's would have been changed to (such as 4.00x19 4.50x19 etc) are sizes that Blockley also produce.
- Tyre size for AC models 15/56, 16/56 and 16/66 from 1927 onwards were listed with size 4.50x19 and by 1928 we first see the 5.00x19 size listed, while the AC 16/40 was listed with the smaller tyre size 4.50x19. By the later 1930's the AC 16/70 and 16/80 models were fitted with 18 inch wheels fitted with the 5.50x18 tyre size (of which Blockley produces a choice of two tyre tread patterns), while the post war 2 litre AC (built from 1947 to 1957) was listed with the 6.70x16 size, for which we would recommend the radial equivalent Blockley 185VR16 tyre size.
