Bentley - Derby Bentley 4 1/4 litre
The Derby 4 1/4 Bentley was introduced in 1936, as a replacement for the earlier 3 1/2 litre model. This coincided with Rolls Royce replacing their 20/25 model with the larger 4257cc engine 25/30 model, which was carried onto the new Bentley. Many other refinements were also included which had evolved over the production of the earlier Bentley 3 1/2 litre. The jump in engine size and performance also helped sell the cars, against the rival car brands which their customers had a choice of. By 1939 the 4 1/4 litre Bentley MR and MX series chassis were fitted with overdrive as standard.
Tyre sizes for the Bentley 4 1/4 are dependent on whether you have the earlier cars 18" wheels or the later cars 17" wheels. Tyre sizes are:
- Earlier Derby Bentley 4 1/4 used the same 18 inch wheels as the earlier 3 1/2 litre cars, fitted with tyre size 550x18. Blockley produce these 550x18 tyres with a choice of two tread patterns, namely an earlier 3 stud pattern and a later "A6C" pattern. The Derby Bentley 4 1/4 built from 1938 onwards were fitted with 17" wheels and fitted with the larger 6.50x17 tyre size, which Blockley produces. There is really no 17" tyre available that we would wish to put on a car, which is why we produced this low volume 650x17 size, mainly because we have a car that needs this size.
