Borgward - Borgward Isabella
The Borgward Isabella was produced from 1954, and for many this 1493cc Isabella was the best of all the Borgwards. It had a 2 door body with a monocoque chassis and enough room to fit in 5 people. The standard car was rated at 60 hp, with the 2 door open bodied Isabella TS having the higher tuned 75 bhp engine. The Isabella was quite an expensive car compared to most alternatives, but the cost was less than a Mercedes, so the Isabella were perceived as good value, although by comparison the open bodied Isabella TS was 3 times the price of a Volkswagen. The Borgward Isabella was in production right until the controversial bankruptcy of the Borgward company in 1961.
