Citroen - Citroen CX
Citroen introduced the CX model in 1974 as a large flagship model, which was voted the car of the year in 1975 shortly before Citroen was taken over by Peugeot a couple of years later, making the CX the last model of Citroen before the takeover. Originally intended to take the largest of the rotary engines developed for it, the rotary engine never made it into the car for various reasons, and a conventional transverse mounted engine took its place, offering a space saving with the bonus of access for ease of maintenance. The CX, with the distinctive kamm back tail stayed in production to 1991. Once in production the 3 variations were the Normale 2 litre 4 cylinder, and the Economique which was the same but with different gear ratios to assist in better fuel economy during the fuel crisis, and finally the CX2200 with the bigger engine. In 1974 the larger capacity CX2400 was introduced, so the CX2200 was gradually discontinued by 1976.
