Daimler - Daimler Sovereign
The Daimler Sovereign was the Daimler version of the Jaguar 420, which was available from 1967. Because it was based on the 420G, some people refer to the Daimler Sovereign incorrectly as the Daimler 420G, or even Sovereign 420 ! One major difference was that unlike the 14" wheels fitted to the Jaguar version, the Daimler Sovereign had larger diameter 15" wheels
From 1969 the Daimler Sovereign was based on the Jaguar XJ6, initially called the "New Sovereign", and only later referred to as the Series 1 when the Series 2 was introduced in 1973. The New Sovereign could be bought with either the 4.2 litre engine or a smaller 2.8 litre engine XK engine. The Series 2 Daimler Sovereign (made between 1973 and 1979) was only available with the 4.2 litre engine, and as with the Jaguar XJ6 had the option of the standard wheelbase, or the longer wheelbase which allowed for more room for rear passengers feet. In addition there was also a 2 door version of the Daimler Sovereign available between 1975 and 1978. For 1979 the Daimler Sovereign Series 3 again mirrored the Jaguar XJ6 but during 1983 there were changes and the Sovereign name was switched around, the Sovereign now becoming the top of the range Jaguar XJ6. And in countries where there were Trademark problems with the name Daimler, these cars got marketed and sold as the Jaguar Vanden Plas. Management were having long
term plans on what to do with Daimler as a brand. Also remember
that 1984 was the year British Leyland sold Jaguar, so the
Sovereign name was now transferred to the Jaguar, where Sovereign
would now denote the top specification Jaguar.
