Datsun - Datsun Sports
The Datsun Sports (marketed in Japan and some countries as the Datsun Fairlady - after the hit Broadway musical) was an open topped sports car. The first model was built in 1959, a fibre glass bodied 988cc Datsun S211, called the Sports 1000, of which only a few were made.
These cars continued into 1960 with the Sports 1200, a 1,189cc metal bodied car also called the SPL212 and from 1961 the SPL213 version with increased power, but again produced in relatively small numbers up to 1962.
These were followed by the Datsun Sports 1500 (SP310 Fairlady or the left hand drive SPL310) from 1963 which were built on the Bluebird 310 mechanicals and platform, that was continually improved in specification right up to 1965. The Datsun 1500 Sports was replaced with the Datsun Sports 1600 as the export models were called (SP311 and left hand drive SPL311). Again, these Datsun Sports 1600 were improved in specification right up to 1970 when production finally ceased. By 1967 there was also a 2 litre version Sports 2000 (SR311 and Left hand drive SRL2000).
