Ford - Ford Capri
The Ford Capri with its fast back bodywork style was in reality the European version of Fords "Mustang", with the body design project carried out by the same person responsible for the Mustang. The Ford Capri became available from 1968, built at Hailwood in the UK as well as the Ford Cologne factory in Germany, with the marketing slogan "The car you always promised yourself". It is interesting that the Ford Capri was based entirely on the Mk2 Cortina, hence the reference to it early on by a journalist as the "Cortina in Drag"! The British built cars were the base model 1300 or the 1600GT with 4 cylinder engines, whereas for the 1970's came the V4 engined 2000GT and the V6 engined 3000GT. The Capri range sold well and for 1970 the previous 4 cylinder Kent engines in the cars were replaced with the 4 cylinder Pinto engine. Externally this Capri looked different with its larger rear lights, as well as larger headlamps, along with reworked new interiors and seats. And in late 1973 the RS2600 (with the German built Cologne V6 engine) was replaced with a bored out Essex V6 to make the Capri RS3100. Ford Capri production carried on to 1986.
Ford Capri tyre sizes:
- All Ford Capri models of Mk 1 and Mk2 were fitted with tyre size 165R13 originally. This was the radial equivalent of the cross ply 6.00x13 as listed on these earlier cars. The 165R13 tyre size covered the Capri 1300, Capri 1600GT and Capri 2000GT models. Blockley manufactures the perfect high speed rated steel belt construction period correct tread 165HR13 tyre, which is what we would recommend - see full details below. Some of the Classic tyre wholesaler / dealers you will note suggest the 175/70R13 size was the correct fitment for a Capri, a size which is fatter and smaller in diameter, which is a size we also produce with a good speed rating, but although some subsequent tyre company fitting lists have this 175/70R13 size listed against the Capri, all these Ford Capris actually left the factory on the 165R13 size.
- The 3 litre Ford Capri 3000GT/E had tyre size 185/70R13 fitted originally, and again Blockley manufactures the perfect high speed rate steel belt construction 185/70VR13 tyre with period correct look. The 185/70R13 size is basically a wider version (but same diameter) of a 165R13 tyre size.
- Ford Capri RS2600 and Capri RS3100 also had tyre size 185/70VR13 originally, which Blockley produces with the correct V (149mph) speed rating.
- Blockley are also the only company to produce the larger 235/60VR13 tyre size suitable for the X-Pac Capri, a tyre size which is suitable for rim widths of up to 9 inches.
No Ford Capri left the factory in period with the 175/70R13 tyre size, but we list this size below also, as some Capri owners have asked for this size.
We guarantee that our steel belted, high speed rated, period correct looking tyres are the best tyres you will drive on - guaranteed - see full details of all these Ford Capri tyre sizes below:
