Ford - Ford Model A
The Ford Model A was the up to date replacement for the Model T, the first Model A leaving the Ford factory at the end of 1927. And to demonstrate progress, it's 3.3 litre side valve engine produced twice the power of the earlier model. As soon as the new Ford Model A was released you could see how things had moved on during the unbelievable 18 years the Model T had been in production. The Model A Ford had brakes to all 4 wheels, much more power, coil ignition replacing the magneto and even an electric starter motor as standard. And the Model A now had conventionally positioned brake and clutch pedals, unlike the unique way the earlier cars operated. By 1929 the Model A was available with nine body style variations. And by the time the model A was replaced in 1931, nearly 5 million of these cars had been made. But outside of the USA the car tax band the Model A fell in was an issue in many countries due to the cylinder bore size and its 3.3 litre engine capacity, which is why a smaller capacity 2 litre engine was built in the UK which on the bore size was rated at 14.9hp - rather than the cars from the USA which would fall into the 24hp bracket. The Model A was built in many countries outside the USA such as Canada, France, Germany, Denmark, Japan and even Russia.
Tyre sizes for the Model A Ford are:
- The earlier Ford Model A is fitted with 21 inch wheels with tyre size 440/450x21, and Blockley makes the best quality perfect example of this tyre, with a period correct tread pattern, and so much better than anything else available elsewhere. The 21" wheel size was used on the Model A up to and including 1929. Please remember that when ordering the inner tube you ask for the "on centre" valve stem which we make for these Model A Fords - see details at the links below.
- From 1930 onwards the Ford Model A was fitted with 19 inch wheels with tyre size 4.75x19. Blockley is the only tyre company in the world that produces a genuine 475x19 tyre, which is marked on it's sidewall 475/500x19 because people are often asking for this! This is because most people now have tyres marked 475/500x19 on their Model A's which are in fact a 500x19 tyre that has been "dual marked". So in conclusion the only correct 4.75x19 tyre made today is the Blockley, and for those wanting a larger diameter 500x19 tyre Blockley makes this size as well (which is marked 5.00x19). See details of both the 475x19 and 500x19 tyres at the links below:
- Many Hot Rod Ford Model A's that are fitted with 16 inch wheels (Ford introduced 16" wheels on Ford cars in 1935) use our 550x16 front tyres and 650x16 rear tyres, which are made to the larger L section dimensions, both these 16" sizes having the same tread pattern.
