Mercedes - Mercedes G-Wagen

The G-Klasse Mercedes project came about at the behest of the Shah of Iran in the early 1970's, who was a shareholder in Daimler-Benz. The Shahs stipulation was for a vehicle design that was something more suitable than the dated American Jeeps that the Iranian army was using. After the design work, prototypes and testing between the companies Daimler Benz and 4 wheel drive specialists Steyr-Puch (now Steyr-Daimler-Puch), production finally started in Austria in 1979. The letter G in G-Klasse stands for Geländewagen, which means off road. And although the prototype was delivered to the Shah, the Revolution that took place put a stop to the reputed 20,000 units that the Shah had ordered for the army. Later there were various Mercedes G Wagen models (W 460 models built from 1979 to 1992) available with both petrol engines called Mercedes 230G , 230GE , 280GE  and with the Diesel engine models listed Mercedes 240GD and Mercedes 300GD . Note that the term "G-Wagen" is only used in the UK and USA to refer to these vehicles . . .

All Mercedes G-Klasse models, namely 230G , 230GE , 280GE , 240GD and 300GD were fitted with the 205R16 tyre size. Our Blockley 205R16 M+S tyre is the perfect fitment, the only tyre available today that looks like the original, irrespective of what you may read elsewhere!
