Peugeot
From and industrial background including cycles, Peugeot were true pioneers of the motorcar, building cars with real understanding using Daimler V twin in 1892. With rear engine, gear drive, wire wheels and steel tube chassis - so incredibly compact and "modern" compared to anything manufacturers that followed did. The Peugeot 202 model was the mainstay for the company during the 1930's with a modern 1300cc replacement for the Peugeot 203 in 1947. A Pininfarina bodied 403 range (1500cc) came in 1955, with the 404 introduced in 1960. For 1965 the new 204 introduced front wheel drive to their range. By 1968 independent rear suspension and power assisted disc brakes came on the 504, which from 1974 could have a new V6 (developed jointly with Volvo).
