Rover - Rover P4
The P4 group of Rovers spanned the years 1949 to 1964, P4 being the factory code for a series of models over the years. The first P4 model was the six cylinder 2.1 litre Rover 75 built from 1948. For 1953 the Rover 75 was augmented by 2 other models, one a larger capacity Rover 90 with the smaller capacity 2 litre four cylinder engine for the more economical Rover 60, using the 2 litre engine of the earlier Land Rover that had some tuning modifications. For 1959 the Rover 60 was replaced by the Rover 80 using the 2.3 litre engine as used in the Land Rover during the same time.
There were many variations to the P4 Rover. From 1957 the Rover 105 (two models of 105R and 105S) had higher compression with modified versions of the Rover 90, followed for 1959 with the Rover S80, all of which were replaced for 1960 with the new Rover 100. The final versions of the P4 Rover was based on the 100, which was a detuned Rover 95 (which replaced the Rover 80) as well as the Rover 110 with more power. Production of these "Auntie" Rovers ended in 1964 which overlapped the Rover P5 series that had started in 1958.
The Rover P4 had a distinctive modern look to it that did not copy anything else, with enclosed wheels, having quite a short bonnet. Later the short boot was extended. The P4 had a chassis with coil operated springs with independent suspension at the front with conventional rear axle with semi elliptic springs.
