Trabant - Trabant 601

The Trabant 601 was made from 1964. It was the same as the previous Trabant P60, but with an all new body shape, and although there were many prototypes of models that followed, the 601 remained little changed until production of the Trabant ended. This was mainly because resources were scarce in the Communist Eastern block, and in any case there was a waiting list of at least 10 years for anyone lucky enough to get a Trabant, so not changing anything that worked was probably a sensible decision, which is why invariably the build quality was lacking. The 601 had many variants and some were exported ; a Trabant 601S which had fog lamps, a Trabant 601 DeLuxe which had a chrome bumper, a Trabant 601 Kubelwagen and the civilian version Trabant 601 Tramp, a model on the same idea as a Mini Moke (and mostly exported), and the 601 Hycomat which had an automatic clutch.

Tyre size for all Trabant cars and types was originally 5.20x13 for which the radial equivalent is the 145R13 tyre size. By 1975 Trabant was quoting a four inch rim width with either cross ply 5.40x13 or radial ply 145R13. Blockley manufactures the best steel belted 145R13 tyre, which will fit all Trabant cars.
