Triumph - Triumph TR4
The new look Michelotti penned Triumph TR4 was built from 1961 to 1967, and had modern conveniences such as wind up windows! Other changes were a wider track with rack and pinion steering while the earlier 2 litre Ferguson engine of the TR3 had been bored out to 2,138cc. This was coupled to a gearbox that had synchromesh on all gears (rather than just the top three) in addition to a Laycock overdrive.
For 1965 the new Triumph TR4A got fitted with independent rear suspension requiring some rear chassis alterations that added weight to the TR4A, although not all the TR4A's had the independent rear suspension fitted. Production of the Triumph TR4 and TR4A carried through to 1967.
Tyre size for the Triumph TR4 was initially 5.90x15 size which is radial equivalent 165R15, and in any case Triumph themselves later on also fitted the 165R15 size from the showroom. Blockley produces a high speed rated steel belt construction and period correct 165VR15 size for the Triumph TR4. If a wider tyre were preferred, which many people fit, there is also a 185/70VR15 Blockley which has the same diameter, with the same period tread pattern and overall wider. The Blockley 165VR15 tyres will transform the handling (and looks) of your TR4 - guaranteed! See full details below:
