Volvo - Volvo 340 & 360
The Volvo 340 was built from 1975, after Volvo had taken full control of DAF. This Volvo was the larger car being developed by DAF, to supplement their small car, which was going to be built using a Renault engine. There had already been some 3 years of work on this project before Volvo took full control of the new company, which allowed Volvo clear access to the vast European market, as Sweden was not an EU member state (Sweden subsequently joined in 1994).
One feature of the 340 (and later 360 introduced from 1983) was the variomatic gearbox transaxle placed at the rear of the car, offering good weight distribution. The Volvo 360 address some of the concerns that the car was underpowered with the 1.4 litre Renault engine. There was a 1.7 litre Renault engine and a 2 litre Volvo engine. But these Volvos were known more for their total reliability and simplicity to work on. The Volvo 340 was in production to 1985, and the Volvo 360 was available until 1991.
Tyre size for the Volvo 340 and 360 range was 175/70R13 with the slightly larger version 185/70R13 tyre size that was fitted to the Volvo 345GLS. When these Volvo 340 and 360 were fitted with 14" wheels they were fitted with the 165R14 tyre size, and Blockley produces the perfect 165HR14 tyre also.
